Projects > Sew Cool

In spring 2019 at McDaniel College, I collaborated with senior art majors, Jonathan Nepini and Melinda Bitzel, on a community-engaged sewing workshop called Sew Cool. We held the event at McDaniel College in a lounge adjacent to the dining hall during the lunch hours. Our goal was to provide students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to learn how to sew: sew buttons, iron a shirt, sew a running stitch, use a sewing machine, sew a patch onto something, etc. We used a giant piece of blank canvas as, well, our blank canvas and taught students to sew on the surface. Our plan was then to use that canvas as a blanket for a community picnic my Advanced Studio class was going to host (it got rained out!). The Sew Cool event was a success and we're hoping to conduct this workshop again in the future.
